What Is Game Development?
A Beginner’s Guide to Careers in the Games Industry. When people imagine a career in game development, they often picture someone sitting alone and writing code. Programming is certainly an important part of creating games, but modern games are built by multidisciplinary teams that combine technology, creativity, storytelling, psychology, art and project management.

What does game development mean?
Game development, often shortened to “game dev”, is the process of creating a game, from the first idea to a finished product and beyond.
Depending on the size of the studio, a game may be created by a small independent team or by hundreds of specialists. The development process commonly includes:
- Developing the initial concept
- Designing the gameplay and player experience
- Creating characters, environments and animations
- Programming game systems and features
- Building and testing prototypes
- Producing audio and visual effects
- Testing, refining and optimising the game
- Preparing the game for launch
- Updating and supporting the game after release
Although every discipline has its own responsibilities, game development is highly collaborative. A designer’s idea must be technically possible to build. Art assets need to work inside the game engine. Programmers, artists and designers need to communicate clearly, and producers must help the team manage time, priorities and scope.
This is why teamwork, communication and problem-solving are just as important as technical or creative ability.
The main disciplines in game development
There is no single “game developer” role. The term can describe many different professions, each contributing something essential to the final experience.
Game design
Game designers develop the systems, rules and interactions that shape the player’s experience. They ask questions such as:
- What does the player do?
- Why is it enjoyable or meaningful?
- How does the game become more challenging?
- How should different mechanics work together?
- How do we communicate goals and feedback to the player?
Game design can include areas such as gameplay design, systems design, combat design, narrative design and level design.
A common misconception is that game designers simply come up with ideas. In reality, the role involves research, documentation, prototyping, testing and constant iteration. Designers need to explain their ideas clearly and work closely with programmers and artists to turn them into playable experiences.
At Futuregames Umeå, Game Designer student Stefan describes vocational studies as providing “the context for learning”. Working alongside other students creates an environment where people can ask for help, exchange ideas and solve problems together.
He also offers an interesting perspective on becoming part of the industry:
“Developers want to hang out with other developers, and game dev students are junior developers.”
That mindset is valuable. Entering the industry does not begin with your first employment contract. It begins when you start making games, collaborating with others and participating in the wider game development community.
Game programming
Game programmers turn ideas into functioning systems. They write the code that makes the game respond to player input, apply rules, display graphics, manage data and communicate across networks.
Depending on the role and studio, game programmers may work with:
- Gameplay systems
- Game engines and tools
- Artificial intelligence
- Physics
- Graphics and rendering
- User interfaces
- Network and multiplayer systems
- Performance and optimisation
- Audio implementation
Languages such as C++ and C# are widely used in game development, alongside engines and tools such as Unreal Engine and Unity. However, knowing a programming language is only part of the profession. Programmers also need to understand algorithms, data structures, debugging, testing and how to write code that other people can maintain.
Futuregames alumnus Tobias now works as a Game Programmer at Blamorama Games. He describes a working day that includes stand-up meetings, planned sprint tasks, coding and helping other developers solve problems.
His advice to aspiring programmers is realistic:
“You have to put yourself out there and create opportunities for yourself.”
Technical ability matters, but so do curiosity, initiative and the willingness to keep learning. Tobias also points out that game programming skills can lead to programming roles outside the games industry. A strong understanding of programming fundamentals, teamwork and agile development methods can be valuable in many technology-related careers.
Game art
Game artists create the visual elements of a game. This can include characters, environments, objects, textures, interfaces, effects and animations.
The field includes several specialisations:
- Concept artists explore the visual direction of the game.
- Character artists create characters and creatures.
- Environment artists build the worlds players explore.
- Technical artists connect art and programming, helping visual assets work efficiently inside the game engine.
- Animators create movement and performance.
- VFX artists create effects such as fire, magic, explosions and weather.
- UI artists design visual elements such as menus, icons and interfaces.
Game art is both creative and technical. Artists must understand visual storytelling, composition, colour and form, but they also need to work within technical limitations. A beautiful asset is only useful if it can be successfully implemented and run efficiently in the game.
For aspiring artists, a focused portfolio is particularly important. Studios want to see not only polished final images, but also an understanding of game-ready workflows and how artistic decisions support the overall experience.
Game UX design
User experience design focuses on how people understand, navigate and interact with a game. A Game UX Designer represents the player’s perspective throughout the development process.
The role may involve:
- Player and user research
- Prototyping
- Usability testing
- Accessibility
- Interface and interaction design
- Player psychology and motivation
- Analysing player behaviour and data
- Improving onboarding and tutorials
Game UX overlaps with both game design and traditional UX design. It is a good fit for people who are interested in games but are also curious about human behaviour, psychology, accessibility and research.

Production and project management
Game producers help teams move from ideas to finished results. They coordinate people, schedules, communication and priorities while helping the team maintain a realistic scope.
Depending on the studio, producers and project managers may:
- Plan development cycles
- Lead meetings and retrospectives
- Identify risks and dependencies
- Coordinate different disciplines
- Communicate with internal and external stakeholders
- Help teams work according to agile methods
- Support a healthy and productive team culture
The role does not necessarily require programming or art skills, but it does require an understanding of how creative and technical teams work. Communication, leadership, organisation and adaptability are essential.
Quality assurance and game testing
Quality assurance, commonly called QA, is more than simply playing games. QA testers systematically investigate how a game behaves, identify problems and communicate them clearly to the development team.
They may test:
- Gameplay features
- Controls and interfaces
- Performance
- Compatibility across different devices
- Multiplayer functionality
- Accessibility
- Localisation
- Unexpected player behaviour
QA can provide valuable insight into the entire development process. However, it should not be viewed as an automatic shortcut into every other discipline. Moving from QA into design or programming is possible, but it normally requires developing and demonstrating the relevant specialist skills.
Audio, writing and other specialist roles
Games also need music, sound effects, voice production and dialogue. Game writers and narrative designers may develop characters, worldbuilding, quests and interactive conversations. Other professionals work with publishing, community management, marketing, data analysis, localisation, business development and player support.
Not every role is present in every studio. Smaller teams often need generalists who can contribute in several areas, while larger studios tend to employ more specialised professionals.
How do you choose the right game development discipline?
Start by thinking about what you enjoy doing, not only which games you enjoy playing.
Ask yourself:
- Do I enjoy solving logical and technical problems?
- Do I like understanding rules, systems and player behaviour?
- Am I motivated by visual creation and storytelling?
- Do I enjoy organising people and processes?
- Do I like researching how people use and experience products?
- Would I rather specialise deeply or work across several areas?
Then try the work in a small and manageable format.
You could create a simple prototype in a game engine, redesign a level, produce a small environment, write a basic gameplay system or join a short game jam. The goal is not to create your dream game immediately. It is to discover which parts of the process make you want to continue even when the work becomes difficult.
Realistic paths into the games industry
There is no single route into game development. People enter the industry through specialised education, university studies, self-directed learning, career changes and personal projects. Many combine several of these paths.
1. Specialised game development education
A specialised school can provide structure, deadlines, feedback and access to several disciplines in the same learning environment.
At Futuregames, students learn through practical assignments and multidisciplinary game projects designed to reflect professional workflows. Designers, programmers, artists and other specialists contribute to shared projects, experience real production cycles and learn how decisions in one discipline affect the rest of the team.
Industry professionals also contribute through educational boards, guest lectures and mentorship. In his role as a mentor at Futuregames Umeå, game developer Oskar explains that his purpose is not to provide every answer:
“I want them to build their own set of tools to tackle challenges in game design and development.”
That ability to approach new problems is important because tools, engines and production methods continue to change throughout a developer’s career.
2. Self-directed learning
It is possible to learn game development independently. There are many accessible engines, tutorials, online communities and digital courses.
This route offers flexibility but requires discipline. Try to avoid spending all your time following tutorials without creating anything of your own. Employers are interested in what you can apply, complete and explain, not how many videos you have watched.
3. Game jams and collaborative projects
Game jams challenge participants to create a small game within a limited time. They are excellent opportunities to practise teamwork, make decisions under pressure and experience a complete development cycle.
They also help you meet other aspiring developers. A small completed team project will often teach you more than an ambitious project that never reaches a playable state.
4. Internships
An internship can provide experience of professional tools, team structures and production processes. It can also help you build relationships and understand what studios expect from junior developers.
Internship periods (known as LIA within Swedish Higher Vocational Education) form an important part of many Futuregames programs. Students apply their skills in a workplace, receive guidance from professionals and gain direct insight into everyday studio life.
An internship is an opportunity, but not a guaranteed job. Preparation still matters: research companies, adapt your application, maintain your portfolio and be ready to explain how you can contribute.
5. Transferable skills from another career
You do not necessarily have to begin directly after upper secondary school. Previous experience in IT, graphic design, architecture, film, project management, writing, psychology or other industries may be relevant.
The key is to connect that experience to a specific game development role and demonstrate the specialist skills required for it. Your previous career can make you distinctive, but it does not replace a relevant portfolio or practical ability.
What do game studios look for in junior applicants?
Requirements vary between roles, but studios commonly look for:
- Strong foundations within a specific discipline
- A clear and relevant portfolio
- Evidence that you can complete projects
- Experience of collaborating with other disciplines
- The ability to receive and use feedback
- Communication and problem-solving skills
- Familiarity with common industry tools and workflows
- Curiosity and a willingness to keep learning
Your portfolio should make your intended role clear. If you want to work as a gameplay programmer, highlight programming projects and explain your technical contribution. If you are applying as an environment artist, show relevant environments, assets and workflows. If you want to become a designer, include playable examples, documentation and explanations of how you tested and improved your work.
For team projects, always state exactly what you contributed.
Building a network without “networking”
The word networking can feel uncomfortable, especially when you are new. It may help to think of it as participating rather than selling yourself.
Attend game jams, talks, portfolio reviews, meetups and industry events. Ask thoughtful questions. Share what you are working on. Offer useful feedback and stay in contact with people you genuinely connect with.
In Umeå, students interact with local developers through mentorship, events and a growing game development community. Stockholm offers proximity to a large concentration of established studios and technology companies, while Malmö combines international studios with a strong independent and entrepreneurial scene.

Is game development the right career for you?
Enjoying games is a good starting point, but developing them is different from playing them. The work involves iteration, feedback, technical constraints and sometimes abandoning ideas that do not serve the project.
It can also be deeply rewarding. Game development allows people with very different skills to create something together, something that can challenge, entertain and connect players around the world.
If you are curious, start small. Explore the disciplines, make something playable and learn from other people. You do not need to know your exact future role today. You only need to take the first step towards discovering it.
